"Young
people or children in need or in distress
often look to the internet to find affection
and support from unknown people. A number
of children are getting attracted to these
chat rooms and later land up being exploited.
One
girl actually met a boy (later found to be
a married man) on net and was trapped to fall
in love (at 15 years, you can get easily trapped
and moreover to tend to believe the person
on the other side). Later she met this man
and was forced to have sex with him, and she
went through a trauma and has to receive counseling.
Some people think it's just the lust for sex,
thus nothing can be done. But to me, it's
child sexual abuse.
There
are many cases like these.
We
need to also address the issue of not passing
cell phone numbers to strangers, as that can
lead to abuse, as well as proper and safe
usage of cell phones, especially camera phones.
Recently an MMS of a Delhi school girl indulging
in sex was put through a popular auction website.
Trauma followed for both the boy and the girl.
Youth at times indulge in cyber sex and are
video taped, and this leads to child pornography
on the net.
IT
industries should regulate the chat rooms
- a chat room monitoring system might be an
effective idea. Transmission of illegal pictures
and video should be blocked. The IT industry
should also take the role and responsibility
to spread awareness through various campaigns.
The
government should have a cyber patrolling
police cell, in all cities. Cyber law should
be made more child-friendly.
Young people should endorse and promote this
campaign, write to the local governments,
take up the issues in local media and youth
groups, and lobby the government to effect
changes."
